Lessons Learned • Applicants need more assistance in developing application • AST developed an experimental permit sample application • Because timelines are tight for the experimental permit, need: • To focus greatly on pre-application consultation • To encourage draft applications • Review documents in a timely manner • AST’s one-stop-shop role was critical to the success of the X Prize Cup • AST had a great deal of responsibility for the safe operation of the amateur rockets
Holloman AFB and X Prize Cup • HAFB Considered Joint X Prize & Base Air Show--Oct 07 • Early they were determining the logistically/legally implications • AST passed on to AF POCs Lessons Learned--Challenges
Holloman AFB and X Prize Cup • 49th Fighter Wing Commander, Gen Goldfein, attended the 2006 X-Prize Cup at Las Cruces • Considered hosting X Prize Cup at Holloman AFB in Alamogordo NM • Initial contact made in October but asked to wait by AF • Holloman needed Air Combat Command approval • Working group suggested to go over FAA lessons learned • Met with Holloman AFB POCs and X Prize in March • During team summit in April pad construction and access may cause change to Lunar Lander challenge
Holloman AFB and X Prize Cup • FAA Nominal Permit Schedule • 30 March 07 Data submitted in support of Environmental review • March April 07 draft applications submitted • 28 May 07 Complete Enough applications must be at FAA to begin 120 day review period for permit issuance • 25 September 07 Permit Issuance • 25 October 07 Dress Rehearsal day at Holloman • 26-27 October 07 X Prize Cup • Ten teams have pre-registered to compete in the Lunar Lander Challenge • Seven in Pre-application consultations with FAA
