When to Scan • When you have a specific question or piece of information you’re looking for, • When you’re scanning, you usually are looking for a specific piece of information or have a question you need answered by a piece of text. • How? To scan information, look for text features that are important nouns and adjectives (content words)
When to Skim • To get the gist (general idea) of written material, reading quickly (accelerated reading). • Do when we don’t have a lot of time for a deeper reading but they still need to know what is being said in a particular piece of writing. • How? Read first sentence and last sentence of each paragraph, or read the first paragraph and the last paragraph of a longer text.
