Work Package 8 - Current Status and UK participationhttp://datagrid-wp8.web.cern.ch/DataGrid-WP8/ F Harris(Oxford/LHCb) Uk GRID meeting Imperial College
Overview of presentation • Overview of WP8 and UK role • Specific UK responsibilities • Amsterdam and matters arising • Relationship with other UK work (and Datagrid overall) • Comment on resources (people and kit) Uk GRID meeting Imperial College
Overview of WP8 and UK role • Interfacing HEP applications to GRID, and developing applications to take advantage of GRID • Year 1 milestones • end June Planning doc ‘ Minimal GRID services required’ • end Dec Report on Run 0 with M9 release • UK activity in several institutes (e.g interfacing MC production to GRID; thinking about data management) Uk GRID meeting Imperial College
Specific UK responsibilities • LHCB • Leading expt grid activities - WP8 and PTB • Major input to planning document, and negotiations with ATF • Major contributions to tests in 2000/1 together with CERN (e.g RAL,Liverpool) (in parallel with prodn) • Several institutes want to work on developing analysis model in GRID environment (Bristol,Cambridge,Oxford,Edinburgh,RAL,Liverpool) • Interface GAUDI/ATHENA to GRID (? Atlas/UK contact) Uk GRID meeting Imperial College
Specific UK responsibilities in WP8 • ATLAS • Italy/US leading WP8 activities currently • UK to get involved when effort available (RHBNC,Sheffield) - GRID performance tests and Atlas MDC • experiment looking at interfacing GAUDI/ATHENA framework to GRID Uk GRID meeting Imperial College
Specific UK responsibilities in WP8 • CMS • Italy/US leading WP8 activities currently • UK involved in WP8 currently through Bristol • Interfacing distributed production to GRID (including UK) • help with transport and data management problems • More UK effort needed Uk GRID meeting Imperial College
Non-LHC experiments and Datagrid WP8 • Not formally part of WP8, but coordination in hand between Datagrid and (PPDG, GriPhyn, EuroGRID ). • CDF/Babar/D0/H1 • Many UK groups will get GRID experience in running/near running experiments which they will move to LHC • Maybe in longer term there may be generic code for data management which can be used in LHC? • US/Europe technical cooperation vital Uk GRID meeting Imperial College

APPROVED Status of WP8 requirements documents • User cases for Test Bed 0 & 1 (meet with ATF 26 Mar and security Mar 29) • To be finalised by Mar 21 for WP8 • Available for WP9 • Will contain also urgent user requirements • User cases for Test Bed 2 & 3 (analysis etc..) • Draft in one month for WP8 • Common user requirements (Specifications) • Together with WP9 and WP10 • First draft in one month • First release at PM6 (EU reqt) Uk GRID meeting Imperial College
APPROVED Strategy for Test Beds • Need test beds to • Validate existing software (applications & DataGRID) • Develop our long-term vision (not only use cases) • At least one site per main partner • For UK main sites RAL, Liverpool +…. • More are of course welcome • WP8 and 9 ready to deploy on March 15 • Usable environment for test • High-availability stable release of GLOBUS • Separation from development and production Uk GRID meeting Imperial College
APPROVED Requirements for Test bed 0 • Working release of GLOBUS • Plus support for it! • Uniform, pervasive and dependable () certification / authentication mechanism • One single login good for all test bed sites • Possibility to add users from experiments Uk GRID meeting Imperial College
APPROVED Test bed installation kits • Products requiring root(system privileges) access • OS, compilers, Objectivity… • To be installed by WP6 • CERN products installation kits • CLHEP, GEANT4, CERNLIB… • Kits provided by CERN / IT and installed by WP6 • Experiment environment installation kits • Kits provided by experiment and installed by WP8 funded effort Uk GRID meeting Imperial College
APPROVED Some Reactions to ATF (preliminary) • Do we really want to use files? • ??Higher level data handling concept needed • We may want to use objects when interacting with DataGRID middleware • We may need UML/IDL models • Is interactive use taken into account in the design? • We need to talk more here • We will propose interactive use cases Uk GRID meeting Imperial College
APPROVED Reactions to ATF (preliminary) • MPI and CORBA will be needed (Biology) • There will be read/write databases! • Database update has to be taken into account • Concerns on portability • Running on Linux and Solaris is not enough • The code should be written to run on any machine with a reasonable cc/java • Worries about the use of CONDOR • Will we all have to install CONDOR? • Is the code Open Source? Uk GRID meeting Imperial College
APPROVED Reactions to ATF (preliminary) • Security is a concern for the M9 release • All implementations should go via some secure mechanism (globus init?) • We meet with ATF Mar 26 to discuss our reaction to M9 deliverables draft Uk GRID meeting Imperial College
Relationship with other UK work (and Datagrid in general) • Ongoing contacts with other UK and general Datagrid WPs + ATF and Security • Priorities to be defined in meeting with ATF • We lack a full time Datagrid Technical Coordinator • ? Coming Uk GRID meeting Imperial College
Comment on resources (people and kit for UK WP8 work) • Groups have made ‘best efforts’ to get started with existing staff. But new staff are essential for the full WP8 programme (in hand with short and long term PPARC applications..), and what happens after 3 years? • UK (PPARC) will be providing official rep to WP8 TWG • We need well defined test facilities separate from production. Hopefully to be provided as part of UK build-up following Hoffman recommendations Uk GRID meeting Imperial College
Conclusions • UK are well represented in WP8. But new staff are essential to fulfill development requirements. • Meetings in next week with WP8, ATF and Security to help define priorities and discuss M9 deliverables. • We must work in conjunction with US GRID efforts to avoid incompatibilities, and also to share effort • Remember we have shortfall in Core Software as well as GRID! Not clear where resources coming from Uk GRID meeting Imperial College
