CAREER: Integrated Research and Education to Probe Coherent and Quantum States in the Presence of Strong Spin- Orbit CouplingGiti A. Khodaparast, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, DMR 0846834 In addition to work at Virginia Tech, my group has been collaborating with large-scale facilities at several national labs including the National High Magnetic Field laboratory in Florida and the High Magnetic Field Facility in Japan, to provide additional information on the properties of several novel material systems at high magnetic fields. Cyclotron Resonance (CR) spectra for InMnAs and InMnSb films at high magnetic fields. The CR measurements provided insight to the band structure of these narrow gap ferromagnetic structures. The CR of InMnSb at 295 K, was measured at 10.6 m; whereas, the other three resonances were measured at 10.7 m. Pulsed magnetic fields with duration of 15 microseconds can be created in a single coil. The coil damages after each shot but samples are unaffected. In collaboration with Prof. Matsuda in Japan.
CAREER: Integrated Research and Education to Probe Coherent and Quantum States in the Presence of Strong Spin- Orbit CouplingGiti A. Khodaparast, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, DMR 0846834 During the last academic year, in collaboration with Mr. Hoffman, the physics instructor at the Roanoke Valley Governor’s School (RVGS), several lectures on modern topics in physics were presented. Jameel McMillan from RVGS, who was actively participating in the lectures, decided to join my group for summer research. In summer of 2011, I supervised two undergraduate students and one high school student. Thomas Howe (supported By the REU supplement)worked on the design of a microwave cavity, and Youssef Al Khamsi from University of Texas in El Paso and Jameel McMillan from Roanoke Governor’s school were involved in two-photon microscopy measurements. My educational activities have been engaging students from minority institutions and underrepresented groups. Youssef From UT El Paso is working with a two-photon confocal microscope Jameel is working with a two-photon confocal microscope
