TCP/IP • Also known as the Internet Protocol Suite. • Named after Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and Internet Protocol (IP), the two most important aspects of TCP/IP. • Is the set of communications protocols used for the Internet and other similar networks. • Contains four layers of methods and protocols which contain functionalities that solve a set of problems.

  4. IP Address • Also known as an Internet Protocol Address. • The numerical label assigned to each device participating in a computer network which uses the Internet Protocol for communication. • Serves two purposes: host or network interface identification, and local addressing.

  5. ISPs • Also known as an Internet Service Provider. • A company that provides access to the Internet. • Access ISPs connect customers to the Internet using copper wires, wireless connections, or fiber-optic connections. • Host ISPs lease server space for businesses and host other peoples servers. • Common ISPs in Canada include Bell, Rogers, and Cogeco.

  6. DNS • Also known as the Domain Name System. • A hierarchical distributed naming system for computer, services, or any resource connected to the Internet. • Associates various information with domain names assigned to each or the participating entities. • Translates domain names, which are meaningful to humans, into the numerical identifiers associated with networking equipment.

  7. URL • Also known as the Uniform Resource Locator or Universal Resource Locator. • A specific character string which constitutes a reference to an Internet resource. • A type of Uniform Resource Identifier (URI).

  8. Search Engines • Also known as a Web Search Engine. • Designed to search for information on the World Wide Web and FTP. • Search results are generally presented in a list of results, which may contain web pages, images, information, and various other types of files. • Most Common Search Engines: Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

  9. Cookies • Also known as an HTTP Cookie, Web Cookie, or Browser Cookie. • Used for an origin website to send state information to a user’s browser, and for the browser to return the state information to the origin site. • Used for authentication, identification of a user session, user’s preferences, shopping cart contents, or anything else that can be accomplished through storing text on a user’s computer.
