Writing Skill I From Topic Sentences to Development / Supporting Sentences
It’s a self-reliant sort of life.(1) We grow nearly all of our fruits and vegetables.(2) Our hens keep us in eggs, with several dozen left over to sell each week.(3) Our bees provide us with honey, and we cut enough wood to just about make it through the heating season.(4)
Sentence 1 is a topic sentence. The controlling idea (主题思想) is “self-reliant”. Therefore, in sentences 2, 3 and 4 the author develops this controlling idea by means of providing details. In sentence 2 he uses “fruits and vegetables”, in sentence 3 “eggs” and in sentence 4 “honey” and “wood”. In this way he develops this paragraph logically and coherently.
Now you are required to analyze the structures of Para 3 and Paras 12~13 by pointing out the controlling ideas of the topic sentences and details in the development sentences.
Para3 • Controlling Idea: Satisfying • Supporting details: • In summer • In winter
Para 12 &13 • Controlling idea of the topic sentence • A couple of special qualities • Controlling idea of the sub-topic sentence • Tolerance • Energy • Details for 1st sub-topic sentence: • Details for 2nd sub-topic sentence:
