  1. Soil Water Absorption

  2. Soil texture is a very important factor controlling how fast water can infiltrate into a soil profile. A soil’s ability to absorb and store water is important for the plants that grow there, and for the landscape surrounding the soil. Soil Water Absorption

  3. Soil texture impacts other components of soil. Remember, we learned all the components of soil earlier. Soil Water Absorption

  4. Soil air and soil water exist in soil pore spaces within the soil profile. Approximately half of the volume of soil can be pore space. Soil Water Absorption

  5. Definition: Soil Pore Spaces: An empty space between soil particles that can be filled by water and air. Soil Water Absorption

  6. Definition: Absorption: The ability of soil to let water soak in. Soil Water Absorption

  7. The more pore space a soil has, the faster water can soak down into the profile. Soil Water Absorption

  8. If water is absorbed too fast, it may travel far down into the soil profile, carrying water and nutrients to a depth lower than most plants can access them. Soil Water Absorption

  9. If water is absorbed too slowly, it may move across the surface of the soil, and start carrying soil away through the process of erosion. Soil Water Absorption

  10. Sometimes a soil’s pore spaces are reduced through human or natural processes. This process is called “compaction” of the soil. Soil Water Absorption

  11. Definition: Soil Compaction: The process by which soil decreases in pore space and does not absorb water very well. Soil Water Absorption
