Several tasks will be carried out to tackle: • Complex processes that involve pollutants, including related influence of climate changes; • New tools to assess fate and transportation of pollutants, and therefore predict more accurately risk to ecosystems and human health; • New tools to improve risk management. • Under management procedures: • Provide decision support systems (DDS) to support management in all compartments (water | soil | air). • Educational contributions: • Scientific education of young researchers in the consortium; • Increase network contacts; • Exchange of MSc and PhD students among institutions; • MSc and PhD dissertations.
Water, Soil and Air systems Development and implementation of tools to evaluate the potential contamination / toxicity of water, soil and air: chemical and biological tools, hydrological and hydrogeological models; Tools/methodologies to quantify pollution vulnerability of water and soil systems; Emerging contaminants (e.g. nanomaterials /nanoparticles) = tools for evaluation =
Impact of toxic algal blooms, mapping and monitoring; Develop integrated systems for physical, chemical and biological processes in surface and groundwater (including in situ validation); Forecast and warning systems for coastal, ocean and atmospheric pollution, including acquisition for timely management of accidents; Atmospheric pollution mapping, monitoring and modelling Water, Soil and Air systems = monitoring and forecasting =
Development of passive samplers to assess old and emerging pollutants (e.g. nanoparticles), pollutant sensors for static and mobile surveillance for atmospheric pollution; Development wireless smart sensor networks for environment monitoring; Impact of climate changes and long-term pollution scenarios Water, Soil and Air systems = technology =

NEW EMERGING SUBSTANCES(e.g. nanoparticles) Smelly sock treatment leaks silver nanoparticles “Silver nanoparticles added to socks to kill the bacteria associated with smelly feet can easily leak into waste water during washing, a new study reveals. The release of these particles could potentially disrupt helpful bacteria used in waste-water treatment facilities, say some researchers, or endanger aquatic organisms in lakes and streams.” “Deodorant Silver Protect anti-bacterial formula with silver ions fights bacteria & body odour.” In New Scientist
