Customer Dishonesty • A loss caused by customer theft, fraudulent payment, or nonpayment • Shoplifting costs retailers 15-37 billion dollars a year, according to the National Retail Federation • Causes higher prices due to need to pay for security personnel, cover inventory shortage, and install theft prevention systems
Employee Risks • Caused by the use of questionable accounting techniques by management • Also due to employee theft and shrinkage • Can be prevented with loss prevention training, and the use of an anonymous way to report those suspected of it • Causes bankruptcy in companies and a loss of public trust
Skills and Working Environment • In the food service industry, this is generally a failure to prepare food properly, or other tampering with it • Can be on the job injuries in any industry, causing lengthy and expensive Worker’s Compensation lawsuits • Also includes customer injury, such as a passenger on a train falling onto the tracks • stress, sexual harassment, illness, and threat of violence in the workplace are also risks
Computer Related Crime • Malware, viruses, spam, etc… are all computer related crime • Cyber thievery, bullying, and the anonymity of the internet also pose a serious threat to many companies and the mental well being of their employees • Is considered a growing, and potentially the most dangerous threat at this point in time • Proper training is key in this situation
