Australia is using up many of its renewable resources too fast. This is a source of many problems for the country. http://www.uic.com.au/graphics/austmap.gif Renewable Resources
Destructive Practices • Overstocking • Overproductivity • Introduction of Foreign animals (Rabbits/Foxes)
3 important factors • Soils’ nutrient content • Freshwater • Distance
soil Australia’s soil is old so it doesn’t have a lot of nutrients. This causes: • Low plant growth rate • Low productive rate • Need of fertilizer for agriculture
Over productivity and soil erosion have also been factors. The soil has been leached of what little nutrients it has left. http://www.bcg.org.au/cb_pages/images/images/05FieldDaySoilPit_640.jpg Soil
Low availability of water can make agriculture expensive and uneconomic. http://www.anra.gov.au/topics/water/images/national/water_21.jpg Water
Causes of Water Shortage • Most of Australia is desert • Unpredictable climate • over irrigation • Higher rainfall near coastline than inland.
Distance • Import/export is expensive • Only five large cities • Cities are isolated
New farming methods Better controlled irrigation Better mining methods More towns between cities http://www.immigration2australia.com/australia_kangaroo.jpg Possible Solutions
