Purpose of today’s meeting • Enhance knowledge of the IOM Report, The Future of Nursing and the Campaign for Action. • Create awareness of Wisconsin initiatives that are aligned with the IOM and Campaign for Action recommendations. • Mobilize regional partners to plan and implement actions for the IOM recommendations.

Future of Nursing Key Messages & Recommendations Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression. • Expand opportunities for nurses to lead collaboration improvement efforts. • Implement nurse residency programs. • Increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80 percent by 2020. 12

Chapter 441 current protects the titles for RN, LPN, and nurse midwives. No title protection or legal definition for the advance practice roles: Advance Practice Nurses (APN) Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Remove Scope-of-practice barriers

Report Recommendations What’s happening in WI Patient-centered care The patient is an active participant in their health care decisions health care team conducting bedside rounding Improves patient outcomes Increase number of interdisciplinary courses Expand opportunities for nurses to lead collaboration improvement efforts.

Linking Education and Practice for Excellence in Public Health Nursing (LEAP) Goal - Improve public health nursing practice through education. An academic and practice partnership lead by UW-Madison School of Nursing Clinical Leadership Institute Goal - expand nurses’ self-knowledge, skills, and competencies in leadership. Partners UW Hospital and Clinics, Division of Nursing and Patient Care Services and the UW-Madison School of Nursing Prepare and enable nurses to lead change to advance health

Interdisciplinary Partnerships to Improve Access and Care Goal - develop educational videos for medical residents and nursing students incorporating patient and family centered care, health literacy, cultural sensitivity and patient education A collaboration to lead by AHEC (Martha McCabe to present) Prepare and enable nurses to lead change to advance health
Key Message # 4Effective workforce planning and policy making require better data collection and an improved information infrastructure. Report Recommendations What’s happening in WI State law requires data collection every 2 years with license renewal. Participating in a nationwide effort to collect nursing workforce supply data. DHS/DPH workforce data Public and Community Health RN Workforce Report Build an infrastructure for the collection and analysis of inter-professional health care workforce data.

Report Recommendations What’s happening in WI Western WI Healthcare Workforce Survey Retirement and Intention Survey: Purpose workforce planning Conducted by La Crosse Medical Health Science Consortium (Joanne Sandvick or Catherine Kolkmeier will present) Build an infrastructure for the collection and analysis of inter-professional health care workforce data.
Purpose of today’s meeting • Enhance knowledge of the IOM Report, The Future of Nursing and the Campaign for Action. • Create awareness of Wisconsin initiatives that are aligned with the IOM and Campaign for Action recommendations. • Mobilize regional partners to plan and implement actions for the IOM recommendations.
Goal for Regional Action Teams At the end of this meeting Regional Teams or individual participants will: • Commit to specific goal (s) and actions. • Report back to WCN on the outcome of that commitment. WCN will compile the information for a formal update at the 2012 WCN conference.
