Arming Teachers Craig Maude Intro to edu Dr. coleman
INTASC Standards, Description and Rationale Standard #6: The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making. Description – I chose standard 6 because it deals with guiding the teachers decision making. My topic is on arming teachers with some sort of weapon in case an intruder comes into a school unwantedly. Rationale – Monitoring and guiding the teacher’s decision making will be a huge factor in arming them with some sort of weapons for defense. Each teacher might have different beliefs on weapons as well as the parents putting their kids in a classroom with armed teachers.
Overview • Arming teacher’s is a huge debate going on as a possible way to prevent school violence. • Many teachers who are or could potentially be trained in owning a firearm could save the lives of many in the future. • Many teachers are for this (Foy) • However, many parents and school board members are against this. (Carlton)
PROS • Stories show proof of success • With the proper training teachers also become trained guards (Arkansas) • Recent School shootings are causing more people to want teachers to be armed • School’s with armed police officers can’t be everywhere at once
PROS • Some school’s don’t have the proper security to keep people out • Arkansas district is paying around $50,000 to arm and train teachers (Arkansas) • The weapons would be concealed and no one would know if they had a gun or not
CONS • Teachers could use the weapon at the wrong time • A student could get a hold of the gun • Send the wrong message to children(Carlton) • Cost more money for the schools
CONS • Many parents could feel uncomfortable sending their children to schools with armed teachers • National Teacher organizations have also rejected arming teachers
Questions • Do you think teachers should be armed? Why? • If teachers were armed with something that wasn’t a handgun do you think they could use a different object to help stop an intruder?
