  2. Instructions • Download Audacity • Download the LAME encoder • Export a file as an .MP3 file and point Audacity at the LAME encoder • The following slides take you through this process

  3. 1. Downloading Audacity • Go to the Sourceforge website at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ • Follow the steps as shown in the following slides to download Audacity

  6. Download Files When you try to download files you may get a security warning underneath the address bar saying that Internet Explorer has blocked the download Click on the message and select ‘Download Files’

  7. Audacity download instructions Choose ‘Run’ to install on one machine, select ‘Save’ to use for install on more than one machine Wait whilst the download completes You may get a security warning – click ‘Run’

  8. Audacity Setup Wizard When greeted with the setup wizard, select ‘Next’ Choose ‘Accept the agreement’ and click ‘Next’ Read the important information and click ‘Next’ Select the Destination Location and click ‘Next’ Select additional tasks and click ‘Next’

  9. Setup is then ready to install Audacity on your computer Click ‘Install’ When completed, click ‘Finish’ Choose the language for Audacity to use and click ‘OK’ Audacity should now be installed on your computer

  10. 2. Download LAME encoder • You can not export files from Audacity as MP3 files without installing the LAME encoder. • This is not a Sourceforge file but can be downloaded via their website by following the steps on the next few slides

Downloading LAME encoder From the LAME download page select the appropriate zip file and click (e.g. ‘For Audacity on Windows’) When asked if you wish to open or save the file, select ‘Open’ Click on ‘Extract all files’ You may need to right click on the folder, select ‘Extract All’ and follow the wizard The files will be downloaded as a Zipped File

  15. Extract Compressed Zipped File Click ‘Browse’ to choose the file location Choose a location for the file which you will remember Click ‘OK’ Be patient while the files are unzipped The files will be saved in the location you have given

  16. 3. Export an .MP3 file for the first time • The first time you export a sound file as an .MP3 file you have to tell Audacity where the LAME encoder is • Follow the instructions in the following slides to do this

  17. Click Export as MP3

  18. Choose the destination Give the file a name Click Save

  19. You will only see this message the first time you save as an MP3 file Audacity tells you it does not know where the LAME encoder is Click Yes

  20. Navigate to the location of the extracted file Select the lame_enc.dll then click Open Open the LAME folder

  21. When you export a file as an MP3 file you will always see this window Complete the fields if you wish then click OK
