What is a Sentence?Complete or Incomplete that is the question!? Mrs. Bonds 4th grade
What is a sentence? • A sentence is a group of words that tells a complete thought. • A sentence ALWAYS tells who or what and what is or what happens.
Examples of a Complete Sentence: • Pet shops sell many kinds of animals. • People like the playful kittens. • Caves are interesting places to visit. • Mrs. Bonds loves teaching her fourth grade students.
Examples of Incomplete Sentences: • Incomplete Sentences are also known as a Fragment. A fragment does not tell a complete thought. • From the sun. • Want to explore. • Many pet shops.
Incomplete/Fragment • With an incomplete sentence or fragment you are always left asking yourself a question. You are trying to figure out what the sentence is talking about. • Example: • Like the playful kittens. • (Who likes the playful kittens? Why do they like the playful kittens?)
Now, it is your turn! • Take out a piece of notebook paper and copy down these fragments. • 1. Mountains, canyons, and valleys. • 2. The huge, dark cave. • 3. Had one, too. • 4. Flutter their feathers. • 5. Loves to shop.
Partner Time! • Work with your partner to form a complete sentence with the given fragments on your paper. • Each person should write a sentence. • So….. That means there should be 2 sentences for each fragment on your paper. A total of 10 complete sentences. • When you are finished bring your paper to me! We will see how you do! GOOD LUCK!
