Common b-ball terms • Field Goal- any shot attempt • Turnover- any form of possession change due to a player’s fault • Block- when a shot is hit in mid-air and knocked away from the hoop • Steal- while dribbling or not a change of possession by taking ball away • 3pt field goal- shot behind the 3 point line worth 3 points • Rebound- getting the ball after a shot attempt whether on defense or offense • Assist- a pass to a player on offense who makes a field goal • Free throw- 2 shots that a player is given after they are fouled, worth 1 point each, shot from the free throw line
5 team fouls (sum of all fouls from any player on each team), then your team is over the limit When a foul is committed before a team is over the limit the ball is taken out on the sideline, the fouled team has possession of the ball When a player is fouled when shooting they always shoot 2 foul shots When over the limit a fouled player always shoots 2 foul shots 6 fouls= out of the game, 1 flagrant foul= out of the game, and 2 technical fouls= out of the game Fouls
Dribbling • Double Dribble- dribbling a ball, stop dribbling, and then dribbling again. • Traveling- moving without dribbling the ball. • Up and Down- jumping up with the ball in hand and not releasing the ball. • Pivot foot- one foot that doesn’t move when you stop dribbling and are holding the ball.
Stats • Double-Double- when a player scores at least 10 points and has 10 rebounds or 10 assists (2 categories). • Triple-Double- when a player scores at least 10 points and has 10 rebounds and 10 assists (3 categories) www.nba.com
Shooting • Keep your elbow in fairly close to your body. • If you right handed then keep your right hand halfway under the ball in front and higher than your face. • Keep your left hand on the left side of the ball just for balance. • When you shoot use mostly your right hand for power.
