HIPPI in 2006 Maurizio Vretenar, CERN • HIPPI Objectives • 2006 Activities • ESAC Report • Planning and deliverables 1
HIPPI:High Intensity Pulsed Proton Injectors • Main objective: • Research and development of the technology for high intensity pulsed proton linear accelerators up to an energy of 200 MeV. • Applications of the HIPPI results: • Upgrade of the linac injectors for GSI, CERN and RAL. • 10 participating laboratories: • RAL, CEA, CERN, FZJ, GSI, IAP-FU, INFN-MI, (INFN-NA), LPSC, IPNO • Expected budget: • 14.7 M€ (FC-equivalent), EU contribution 3.6 M€ 2
HIPPI Workplan • 2007-08: • comparative assessments • Linac designs being finalised 3
HIPPI Technical Goals HIPPI Technical Goals from HIPPI Proposal (Annex 1), reviewed at the HIPPI06 Meeting: • WP2: High shunt impedance normal conducting cavities ZT2 > 40 MW/m, 3 … 100 MeV, low cost • WP3: Low beta superconducting cavities Eacc > 7 MV/m, Q > 1010, 5 … 200 MeV • WP4: Lossless injection in a ring chopper rise time < 2 ns, minimum emittance growth • WP5: Control of the halo validation of codes, design for loss < 1 W/m up to 1 GeV 4
2006 Annual Meeting • 37 participants from 14 Laboratories (10 HIPPI, 1 external, 3 members of External Scientific Advisory Committee - ESAC) • 28 technical presentations: 4 on general (inter-WP) topics, 24 on WP specialist topics + 4 presentations on organizational or administrative matters. • 25% of time devoted to questions and discussion. • The ESAC participated actively to the discussions (+ 5 hours for reviewing) IKP, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Jülich (Germany) Programme, copy of slides, list of participants: http://www.fz-juelich.de/ikp/hippi/autumn2006/ 6
2006 Publications • Good number and quality of HIPPI Publications in 2006: • CARE-CONF : 18 • CARE-NOTES : 9 • CARE/HIPPIdoc : 1 • For a total of 28 papers in 2006 • (until end of October, average of 2.8/month) 7
WP2: Normal-conducting structures Overview of the 6 models (cold) and prototypes (hot) developed, built and analysed inside HIPPI: 8
WP 2 – Progress with CH-DTL for the GSI linac Some convergence (or cross-fertilization): coupling cells have been added to the CH-DTL structure, as in CCDTL and SCL. New (top) and old design (bottom) of the intertank connection of the CH-DTL developed at IAP-Frankfurt for the FAIR project at GSI The CH-DTL model built at IAP-Frankfurt. Decision by GSI to move from 352 MHz to 324 MHz: easier CH-DTL and compatible with UNILAC upgrade (324=3*108), but no more standardisation of frequencies at the European level. 9
WP2 – Prototyping at CERN for Linac4 CCDTL pre-prototype built at CERN during high-power tests (left). Prototype built in Russia by ISTC (right) being completed (delivery at CERN in Jan. 07) Concern: delays (1 yr CCDTL1, 6 months CCDTL2) and bad quality of work due to priority given to LHC (CERN mechanical workshops, CERN vacuum team, even Novossibirsk workshops!) 10
478 WP2 – Drift Tube Linac Studies Mechanical design of ISTC DTL prototype Studies of DTL post-coupler stabilisation at CERN 11
WP2 – Side Coupled at LPSC Side Coupled model and RF coupler for DTL being made at LPSC (participation to Linac4 R&D). 12
WP3 (Superconducting) – review of prototypes 7 prototypes in HIPPI: 3 built and tested, 3 only tested in pulsed mode, 1 only for the tuning system: 13
WP4 Progress – CERN-chopper structure September 06 September 05 electrical measurements and vacuum tests are done : OK 18
WP4 Progress – CERN dump READY 19
WP4 Progress -RAL Fast and slowchoppermodules 1.5 m Chopper 1 (fast transition) BEAM Chopper 2 / Beam dump(slower transition) DESIGN HAS CHANGED RECENTLY. 20
WP4 Progress -RAL SPG pre-prototype ‘Breadboard’ system - 8 kV~ 5 μF LF cap.bank HVdamping resistor 8 kV push-pullMOSFETswitch + 8 kV~ 5 μF LF cap.bank + 8 kV~ 3 nF HF cap.bank - 8 kV~ 3 nF HF cap.bank Two turn load inductance ~ 50 nH Load capacitance ~ 30 pf 6 kV, 400 MHz ÷ 1000 probe Trigger input Auxiliary power supplies Cooling fan 21
WP4 Problem : DELAYS • Delay in the CERN mechanical workshop (low-priority in front of LHC) • Delay in vacuum testing ( Vacuum group overloaded) • Delays in delivery of the IPHI-RFQ at CERN (key component of the 3 MeV test stand) • Move of the lab area at RAL 22
HIPPI@Saclay Choppers QUAD BSHM DUMP • No compromise on the HIPPI goals by going to Saclay w.r.t. tests originally foreseen at CERN. • Agreement of the IPHI Steering Committee. Technical document in preparation, to be validated by the next IPHI Steering Committee in October. 23
WP 5 – Beam dynamics Preparation of appropriate tools for the analysis of high-intensity linear accelerators: beam dynamics codes and detectors. Benchmarking of 7 codes (some old, some new, some updated) finished, results are comparable, benchmarking in progress with measurements at GSI UNILAC: first measurement campaign successfully completed in (March and October 06). Progress in the understanding of beam neutralization phenomena. 25
WP 5 – Simulations for CERN and GSI Linac designs Beam dynamics work focused on the requirements of 2 well defined linac projects: CERN Linac4 (tracking+error studies) and GSI FAIR linac (space charge routine for LORASR). 26
ESAC Assessment All 3 ESAC members present at HIPPI06 (J. Stovall, A. Pisent, Y. Yamazaki), ESAC report received (although only yesterday…). 13 page document, quite complete analysis of all HIPPI activities, will be annexed to the HIPPI Annual Report. In general the committee found all of the presentations to be of professional quality. In some cases the work represents important contributions to the art as described below. In some cases the presentations demonstrate the professional development of young scientists under the excellent tutelage of senior scientists. All of the presentations presented represent work at the “international standard.” With the focus on specific upgrade designs, and while no less important, it will be more challenging for the work-package managers to maintain the close collaborations among the HIPPI institutions that we have seen in the first 3 years. The committee is pleased to observe no reluctance among the participants to collaborate with their colleagues and in some cases to note strong inter-lab collaborations. Concerns of the ESAC: delays in chopper beam tests – delays in DTL tank prototype - 27
