  4. Asexual • One parent • Requires mitosis • Offspring are identical to the parent • Examples- • Binary fission- bacteria • Budding- hydra (p 679) • Cuttings- some plant (mums) • Runners- strawberry

  5. Sexual • Two parents • Male • Female • Requires meiosis • Forms gametes- • Reduces the chromosome number

  6. Sexual • Requires fertilization • Union of gametes • Restores diploid # • 1N + 1N = 2N • Offspring inherit ½ chromosomes from each parent • Offspring are different than the parents and each other (except identical twins)
