  1. The Gonzalez Therapy By Laura Wiseley

  2. Prevalence of Pancreatic Cancer • Fifth leading cause of cancer death • 27,000 annual deaths in the U.S. • Overall survival rate • 25% at 1 year • 10% at 2 years • ~4% at 5 years • 25% of cases eligible for surgery • Post-op survival <20% at 5 years

  3. Gonzalez Treatment • Enzymes • Porcine Pancreatic Enzymes • Diet • Organic diet, vitamin, mineral, and trace element supplements, Papaya Plus, extracts of animal origins, magnesium citrate • Detox • Skin cleansing • Coffee Enemas

  4. Pancreatic Enzymes • From Special Pigs in New Zealand • Clients take up 45 grams • Pancreatic enzymes • Help eliminate toxic waste from body • Help normal cells repair damaged ones • Rationale • Cancer caused by primordial germ cells • Cancer controlled by pancreatic enzymes

  5. Nutrition Program • Organic, not refined, not heavily processed • Nine different diets with 10 variations • Individualized by “Autonomic Balance” and “Metabolic Type” • Sympathetic, Parasympathetic, and Balanced • Genetic Type • Vegetarian, Metabolizer, Meat • Supplements of animal organs, vitamins, minerals, trace elements, papaya, Mg+ citrate

  6. Skin Cleansing • Further detoxifies body • May be brushing, soaking, or other cleansing • Brushing • On dry skin • Stimulates and cleanses the lymphatic system • Soaking • Help to pull toxins out of the skin • May be done in vinegar or salt and baking soda • Castor oil cleanse

  7. Coffee Enema • Used for ability to stimulate contractions in the gall bladder • Causes emptying of toxins into the bowel • Historically used in many ancient civilizations • Included in the Merck Manual until 1977 • Decaf enemas • Used to prepare for surgery • Some use as a laxative

  8. Coffee Enema • How are they done? • 3-4 cups of organic brewed coffee • Cooled to body temperature • Pour into an enema bag • Lay down (recommended) • Hang bag ~18 inches above body • Open valve till coffee reaches surface

  9. Coffee Enema • Insert applicator into rectum • Open valve to release coffee into colon • Remove enema bag • Retain enema for 10-20 minutes • Rotate frequently

  10. Scientific Evidence • Mouse Trials Objective-To examine the effects of PPE on human xenografts in nude mice Methods- 30 male mice injected with PC tumor cells. 15 Given PPE, 15 nothing. Results-Mice given PPE lived longer (p<.002) Tumors from PPE mice were smaller Negative effects of tumors in control mice earlier and more severe than exp. group

  11. Evaluation of Pancreatic Proteolytic Enzyme Treatment of Adenocarcinoma of the Pancreas, with Nutrition and Detoxification SupportGonzalez NJ, Isaacs LL. Nutrition and Cancer 33 (2): 117-124, 1999 • Prospective nonconsecutive case series • 11 patients with Stage II or Stage IV PC • No chemo- or radiation therapy, nor surgical resection • Survival time was the endpoint of study • Mean survival time 25.2 months

  12. Evaluation of Pancreatic Proteolytic Enzyme Treatment of Adenocarcinoma of the Pancreas, with Nutrition and Detoxification SupportGonzalez NJ, Isaacs LL. Nutrition and Cancer 33 (2): 117-124, 1999. • 82% survival at 1 year • 45% survival at 2 years • 36% survival at 3 years • 1 patient survived 4 years How does this compare to chemotherapy?

  13. Gemcitabine Compared with Pancreatic Enzyme Therapy Plus Specialized Diet (Gonzalez Regimen) in Treating Patients Who Have Stage II, Stage III, or Stage IV Pancreatic CancerNicholas Gonzalez Clinical Trial • NIH Phase III Clinical Trial • Definition of Phases I, II, III, and IV • Unblinded Intervention Trial • Patients choose either the Nutritional Arm or the Chemotherapy Arm • Chemotherapy Arm includes tx with Gemcitabine. • QOL assessed at 0, 2, 6, and 12 months • Patients “assessed” at 1, 3, 5, 7, and 12 months • QOL and assessment done every year after first 12 months.

  14. Gemcitabine Compared with Pancreatic Enzyme Therapy Plus Specialized Diet (Gonzalez Regimen) in Treating Patients Who Have Stage II, Stage III, or Stage IV Pancreatic CancerNicholas Gonzalez Clinical Trial • Nutrition Arm (21-day cycle) • Pancreatic Enzymes, Papaya Plus and Magnesium Citrate • Nutrition Supplementation • Moderate vegetarian metabolizer diet • Coffee enema 2x/d • Daily skin brushing, skin cleansing with castor oil weekly, salt and soda bath weekly • Complete liver flush and a “clean sweep and purge” each month

  15. Conclusions • Present research shows interesting findings • Too small, no control • 25 eligible patients were not included • Comorbidities, previous tx, “predicted noncompliance” • NIH study should give more insight • Diet? • Coffee enemas have not been shown to improve liver function

  16. Recommendations • Keep your eyes peeled for the NIH study in the next few years
