Kids’ Tech University (KTU) • Created by Virginia Tech’s Virginia Bioinformatics Institute in 2009 • Goal is to spark interest and excitement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in children between the ages of 9-12 • Intended for children within four hours of Virginia Tech • Hold monthly events emphasizing a different STEM discipline • ~450 kids each event Photo Courtesy of http://kidstechuniversity.vbi.vt.edu/index.php
Technology ktu • February 25th, 2012 in Blacksburg, VA • Technology themed KTU event • Goal was to allow kids to design and create their own rockets while teaching the basics of rockets to them • Total cost under $50
Science ktu • March 22th, 2012 in Blacksburg, VA • Science themed KTU event • Goal was to allow kids to design and create their own parachutes while teaching the basic drag principles of aerodynamics to them • Cost under $40
Governor’s school • March 28th in Pulaski, VA • Juniors/Seniors in high school • Met with approximately 100 prospective college students • Introduce them to aspects of engineering • Extracurricular • Research
