ISSUES FOR RECREATION PROVIDERS • What issues would you face as a recreation provider if people chose to decrease their walking? • Decreased use of recreation areas and facilities • Leads to decreased funding • Increased health issues such as obesity
IF YOU WANT TO WALK… National Recreation Trails (NRT) • Over 1,000 trails in all 50 states • Range from less than 1 mile to 485 miles • Can be found in rural, urban, and remote areas • Federal, state, municipal, and privately owned lands
IF YOU WANT TO WALK… • Designated by the Secretary of Interior or the Secretary of Agriculture through an application process • Benefits • Promotion • Technical Assistance • Networking • Funding
WALKING IN THE TWIN CITIES • Constitution Trail • Tipton Park • White Oak Park
How many times do you make separate trips in your car? Are you able to decrease the amount of trips in your car a day?
Automobiles are taking over.. • Number of automobiles may surpass number of people in the world within the next decade • Accounts for 4 out of every 5 miles traveled • Average of 1.9 vehicles in each U.S. household • 92% of households own a car • 90% of long distance trips are made by a personal vehicle • 1 out of 6 people used another form of transportation in the past 2 months
Too Much, Too Soon • Gas prices will continue to increase • Long distance travel will continue to rise due to the rising cost of airplane fuel. • Younger demographics will rely more on vehicle transportation than on alternative methods of transportation • Cost of family recreation and leisure will rise. Example: A family of four going to an Indianapolis Colts football game
Reinventing the Automobile • Starts with creating more fuel efficient vehicles • Low to no fuel costs • Emits less pollution • Provides a more cost efficient and environmentally efficient travel experience • The Future of Cars
Electric Car Industry • Hybrids: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVpKxtGygZE&feature=related • Smart Cars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcnyyaeEgys
Not All is Lost! • Fuel Efficient Cars will make many forms of leisure more accessible to many disadvantaged populations. • High Speed Rail Train Systems will create more cost effective and decrease the travel time on long distance trips. Example: President Obama’s Initiative
High- Speed Rail System • $ 8 billion investment • “ a system that reduces travel time times, increases mobility, reduces congestion, boosts productivity, reduces emissions and creates jobs.” • 10 corridors indentified, ranging from 100-600 miles long • Ex: California high- speed trains: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Nx8rNysZSI&feature=related
Questions to consider… • Would driving an automobile that needed almost no fuel change your personal leisure pattern behavior? Why or why not? • Do you ever think automobiles will be banned in major cities, or only be allowed to drive at certain times? • How might high- speed trains impact tourism?
