In what ways did Germany expand in the late 1930’s? • Treaty of Versailles left Germany in ruins – Hitler violates it to get what he wants • Hitler's concept of “lebensraum” or living space required a military to help expand the country Acts of aggression: • Militarizing the Rhineland - 1936 • Annexing Austria – 1938 • Czechoslovakia and Appeasement – late 1938

What alliances did the axis nations make in the 1930’s? • Axis Powers – countries willing to use their military to get what they wanted • Germany • Italy • Japan Comintern Pact: made between Germany and Japan to stop the spread of communism Spanish Civil War: Italy and Germany aid Fascist Francisco Franco who is fighting against the Soviet backed Republicans Nazi-Soviet Nonaggression Pact – August 1939

  4. How does WWII begin? • September 1, 1939- Germany attacks Poland • Germany used blitzkrieg or lighting war to stun Poland into submission • September 3, 1939- Great Britain and France declare war on Germany but do not offer enough help to save the country

All out war! • Spring 1940 – invasion of Norway and Demark • May 1940 – invasion of the Netherlands and Belgium, then attacks begin on France • France leaves the forests of the Ardennes almost unguarded. The Germans plough through the thick forest and quickly take the entire nation. • Rescue at Dunkirk – 30,000 soldiers are rescued and taken to Great Britain. • Establishment of the Vichy Republic - French politicians who worked with/for Hitler during Germanys occupation

Battle for Britain and the London Blitz • August and October 1940 “Germany sent thousands of aircraft over the English Channel to attack British targets.” • Fall of 1940 Germany began bombing ports in London • The British used radar to warn civilians who would then hide in shelters or bunkers. • By 1941 Germany had suffered too many losses and stopped the attempted invasion. • http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/battle_of_britain#default

The invasion of the Soviet Union • June 1941- Hitler broke his agreement with Stalin and sent 3 million German troops to Russia • The Red army suffered great losses but kept the Germans out of Moscow • Winter set in and Hitler's troops were ill prepared to deal with the climate • The Soviets were able to recoup and started fighting back

Japan Attacks • The U.S. stopped selling oil to Japan, because of their invasion of French Indochina (Vietnam), this threatened their growing war machine • December 7, 1941 – Japan surprise attacked the United States Pacific Navy at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii • On December 8, 1941 – the United States declared war on Japan
