  3. MFTS: Project 1st IFAD Collaboration with PKSF

  4. The goal of the MFTS project is to improve the livelihood and food security of 2,34,000 moderate and Ultra poor households and the empowerment of women by adoption of sustainable IGA and livestock technology. Project Objectives

  5. Operational Arrangements • Channeling loan (micro-credit and institutional development loan) and grant funds for beneficiary training to POs; • Monitoring (On and Off site) PO performance in delivering project services; • Providing IGAs training to PO staffs. • Arranging specialized IGAs training for beneficiaries. • Linkage with GO / other agencies for input support and services.

  6. Major responsibilities of MFIs  Selection of Moderate and Ultra poor  Organizing and providing training (Livestock IGAs and Social Development) to beneficiaries.  Providing credit  Ensuring inputs for implementation of livestock IGAs.  Supervising and assisting in IGAs implementation. The 24 selected MFIs established 170 Branch offices.

  18. Implementation Support • Involvement of Department of Livestock Department (DLS) in MFTS project. A MOU between DLS and PKSF signed on 4th April 2005 for ensuring supply of inputs necessary to make the project sustainable. • Technical Support ensured from GO and Other Agencies

Chick Rearer Poultry Worker Information/Network/Technology Transfer/Inputs, Raw materials assurance/Skill/Market Information/Financing Plan Given by PCU, MFTS Surplus Male Growing Birds Eggs/Meat Bird Poultry Keeper Market Marketing Linkages (Intra & Inter) Area Offices have established Poultry Production Model Chain. For instances beneficiary is producing fertile eggs and supplying to both Mini hatchery owner and rural woman individually. Individual woman is producing chick through natural brooding (eggs keeping under deshi hen).

  22. Result of Mid Term Impact

  23. The number of livestock increased -55% more cattle, 113% more sheep and goats and 81% for poultry. With cross-bred cattle increased by 631% Sonali or Fayoumi chickens by 387% and broilers by 763%. The proportion of households selling milk has doubled from 14% to 29%, Egg selling households have increased from 13% to 19%. The average value of milk sold by each selling household has increased three times while the value of eggs have increased by five times. Increased in the sales of chickens, goats and cattle. Increased in livestock production, together with access to credit for a range of other IGAs, has meant that ownership of other assets such a bicycles, rickshaws, sewing machines, radios and TVs have all increased.   Daily labour is the main source of income falling from 30% to 11%, and the proportion where livestock/poultry are the main source doubling from 16% to 32%. Food security has improved – the average number of months where households do not get three meals per day has fallen from 3.51 months to 2.86 months. Own tubewells for drinking water has increased from 42% to 68% (from 9% to 42% for Ultrapoor) and using hygienic latrines from 59% to 95% (28% to 93% for Ultra poor). Achievements

  24. “less quarrel with husband as less poverty” and have increased status in their families due to earning income. -Better nutrition due to poultry -Children now go to school -Women build up assets such as cows -Women can now buy things, such a betel nut, -and no longer have to depend on husbands -Women are empowered - “Women can now open their mouths” -Much technical knowledge is now transferred by Livestock Technical Assistants (LTAs) -Have very low mortality of poultry, -And also know about poultry feeding and husbandry. -Most people now use urea-molasses treated straw to feed their cattle -If their cows are sick they contact the LTA or DLS veterinary officer via mobile phone -Losses of poultry due to disease are greatly reduced -AI is being used to produce cross-bred milking cows. -People now have regular income from livestock (milk, eggs) -and eat better, they are spending money on education, leasing land for crops, and have better sanitation and hygiene practices.
