  2. What are they? • Primarily members of zooplankton • Intricate silica shells with openings that allow their pseudopods to project outward • These are used to gather food and it also reduces their sinking rates • Reproduce sexually

  3. Continued… • Some exist only in the upper layers of the ocean while others live in the bottom layers • Some migrate from these layers according to the season • Their dead shells contribute greatly to the bottom sediment of the ocean

  4. Species of Radiolarian • Polycystina is the most beautiful specimen of all the Radiolarians • They have fossils over 500 million years old • One of the oldest mircrospecimens • They have a complex skeleton
