A little bit about me • Maytal Dahan • Live in Los Angeles, but work for the Texas Advanced Computing Center at the University of Texas at Austin • Director of Advanced Computing Interfaces • I’ve been working remotely in a variety of yoga pants for the past 16+ years • Grown from developer, software engineer, project lead, group manager, director • I manage almost 30 employees • In addition, I lead and manage multiple large scale projects with a diverse set of teams – PMs, Technical Leads, Stakeholders, etc.

What are we going to talk about today? • Interested in telecommuting? • It is more than just working in your PJs on the couch • Learn how to pitch the idea to your boss • Interesting in learning how to manage from afar? • Learn how to be the best boss remotely • Already telecommuting? • Strategies on how you manage your day • Learn about how to be more productive • Collaborate with others on ideas to maintain accountability and visibility

Strategies for Pitching Telecommuting • Telecommuting is NOT sitting on the couch eating bonbons • Actively push up against the impression that you are not going to be as productive as the person coming into the office every day. • You are going to have to work 110% to show that you are being a productive employee. • So here are a few strategies when it comes to pitching telecommuting….

  6. Know Yourself • Am I the right type of person for telecommuting? • Don’t mind being alone • Ability to tune out distractions • Self Motivated • Feel energized, enthusiastic and excited about working remotely • Diligent • Autonomous, Self Starting • Able to engage others independently

  7. Know Your Organization • Know your Boss • Suggest a trial period • Track your tasks • Stay visible and active on email, chat, etc. • ACTIVELY participate in conversations in the organization

Designate your workspace • When you are at your desk you are in WORK MODE • Treat your workspace similar to how you would in a traditional office • Try to keep your desk clean and free of clutter • Invest in an office space that helps you be productive • Comfortable office chair • Keyboard & Mouse • External Monitor • Footrest • Proper lighting
