Welcome to St. Joan of Arc’sPrekindergarten August 23, 2013
Laure Dotterweich • Towson University B.S. and MEd. • I taught for Balt. Co. Public Schools. • I’ve been married to Ray for 19 years. • My 2 boys attended SJA. (John Carroll 10th and 11th grades) • I’ve been teaching here for 9 years in K and Second grade. • Our adopted Puggle is named Pugsly. • I volunteer at Luna’s House Animal Rescue Center.
Our Curriculum • Archdiocesan Early Childhood Standards • Learn through structured creative play. • Centers – academic and play based • Reading program – Super Kids - Fairy Tales teaching phonemic awareness • Science and Social Studies Themes * 21st Century Skills: critically think, problem-solve, be creative, collaborate, communicate
Reading and Writing • Phonemic Awareness is the root of reading. (what we hear) • Sight Words – We will recognize pre-primer words. • Kid-writing or stretch spelling is developmentally appropriate. We’ll use journals but most will draw while only some will try writing. • Your child will read when their brain is ready (ages 4-7). It can’t be forced but it can be encouraged and supported.
Math • Number sense – counting, comparing, sorting • Number relationships - how numbers work together • Taught during morning meeting and calendar time • Taught throughout the day • Small groups during center time • Based on what they’ll need to know for Kindergarten
What about lunch and rest? • Snack time – healthy choice and water • Lunch – send a kitchen towel for table. (spoons!) • HELP! – please consider volunteering during lunch (11:30-12:15). • Bathroom –anytime except rest time (unless they ask) • Rest time 50 min. (beginning to end) – need a small beach towel, little pillow, stuffy toy. • We may listen to music or story
A typical day • Whole group and small group learning during center time • Centers – academic and play based Creating, Constructing, Discovery, Story time, Dramatic Play, Fun & Games • Specials: Music, PE, Art, Spanish, and Library
My Philosophy • Play is a central part of neurological growth and development. • Play is an important way that children build complex, skilled, responsive, socially adept and cognitively flexible brains. • Play allows children to learn and practice critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills. • Play fosters the growth of motor skills which are imperative for later reading ability. • Brain-based research supports this philosophy.
