  2. ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD is one of the most common childhood disorders and can continue through adolescence and adulthood. It is a problem with inattentiveness, over-activity, impulsivity, or a combination.

  3. Statistics of ADHD • Boys are often most likely to be diagnosed with ADHD. • 75% of boys with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) may also be hyperactive as well as 60% of girls with ADD are also hyperactive. • 40% of children with ADHD have a parent with ADHD. • 25% of all students have other serious learning problems.

  4. Symptoms of ADHD The symptoms of ADHD fall into three groups: • Lack of Attention (Inattentiveness) • Hyperactivity • Impulsive Behavior (Impulsivity) Most children have the inattentive type of ADHD but, they may also have a combination of types.

Inattentive Symptoms • Has difficulty organizing tasks and activities. • Is easily distracted • Difficulty paying attention • Often forgetful in daily activities • Careless mistakes in schoolwork and fails to pay close attention to details • Does not seem to listen when spoken to directly • Often loses things

  6. Hyperactivity Symptoms • Fidgets with hands with feet or moves in seat • Leaves seat when expected to be seated • Runs about or climbs • Has difficulty playing quietly • Often on the go

  7. Impulsivity Symptoms • Blurts out answers before questions have been completed • Has difficulty awaiting turn • Interrupts or intrudes on others (butts into conversations or games)

Treatments for ADHD • Stimulant medications and other drugs, and behavioral therapy. 2 Treatment Strategies that have been shown to be effective are: • Closely Monitored medication treatment program • Combines medication with intensive behavior therapy • The most effective approach to treatment for children is multidisciplinary approach.

  9. Medications to Treat ADHD Primary ADHD medications include, stimulants, non stimulants, an antidepressants. • Methylphenidate- Ritalin, Metadate, Concerta, Daytrana • Amphetamines-Dexedrine, Dextrostat, Adderall and a newer drug, Vyvanse • Nonstimulants-Strattera and Intuniv • Antidepressants- Wellbutrin Some of these medications also treat tics and insomnia from side effects of other drugs.

  10. Tips For Managing ADHD Multidisciplinary Approach • Education for both parents and child or teen about diagnosis and treatment • ADHD medication • Behavior Management Therapy • School Teacher Involvement • School Counselor Involvement
