  1. History • Two programs claim to be the first study abroad program. • University of Delaware • Indiana University • ERASMUS Program • 1987 • ISEP • 1979 Georgetown University

  2. Indiana University • The oldest recorded faculty-initiated study abroad programs were called Summer Tramps. • David Starr Jordan, president of the university, co-started this program in 1879. • Credit wasn’t established until 1890 for these trips.

  3. University of Delaware • Professor Raymond W. Kirkbride approached then University President Walter S. Hullihen • In 1923 eight students and Kirkbride traveled to France for six weeks.

  4. Georgetown University • The International Student Exchange Program was established at Georgetown under the Fulbright-Hays Act in 1979 • The program was supported by (former) United States Information Agency until 1996 • In 1997 ISEP was incorporated and became a non-profit identity that now includes 300 institutions in 50 countries

  5. ERASMUS Program • The European Community Action Scheme for Mobility of University Students • Pilot student programs went from 1981-1986 and was adopted during the 1987/1988 academic year allowing 3,244 student to travel that year. • Has since been included in the Lifelong Learning Program (2007-2013)
