Overview The golden detector Issues Requests
The golden detector • The golden detector for a Neutrino Factory should be able to address -almost by itself (probably with the help of some other technology at a different baseline)-: • CP violation, Mass hierarchy • using mostly the golden channel, and others if possible (degeneracies) • A Segmented Magnetic Detector (SMD) is probably the golden candidate • A pure iron calorimeter can be built. However: • No access to low energy neutrinos. Problems with CP for small • No electron/tau reconstruction. • TASD detectors should be better in terms of performance, however: • The lower density must be compensated with much larger size • The magnetization of large volumes (without iron) is a problem • The optimal detector in terms of performance/cost/feasibility/size could be a hybrid detector: • SCIN-IRON sandwich more mass • TASD+MECC tau reconstruction • TASD+MECC+IRON • … • We must come up with a conceptual design for a golden detector
Issues L.Camillieri P.Strolin M. Selvi A. Bross • Large magnetic volumes • Magnetization of iron • Air-core magnets • Active components: • Scientillator + readout production: • From 1M channels in NOvA to 10M • Engineering tests • Photodetectors: follow developments by T2K and NOvA. Try to find the option that maximises the performance/cost ratio • SiPMs, MRS, APDS, VLPCs • Simulations: • study de performance of different configurations in terms of S/N ratio • and sensitivity to oscillation parameters. • Hybridization: • TASD+IRON • TASD+MECC • … • Is it possible to have it on the surface? • Maximum detector size for an underground location Bross J.Peltoniemi M. Ellis A. Cervera E. Couce SMD + ECC groups
