  2. Carnival • Also known as king Momo´s celebrations • it is celebrated during four consecutives days. One day before the Ash Wednesday. • in Panama, it ends the Tuesday with the Entierro de la sardina ( lit. sardine´s burial)

  3. Origins of the carnival in Panama • During the colonial period, people dressed as Spaniard Queen and King, soldiers and slaves, simulating battles around the streets of the city. • in 1910, the major of Panama city, made it official by choosing the first Queen.

  6. The King Momo He is considered the King of the carnival His presence show the arrival of the carnival traditionally, a fat and funny person is chosen to role as him.

  7. Queen of the Carnival • A parade is performed to choose the Queen of the carnival • Each participant wear glamorous dresses • At the end of the parade, people chooses the most decorated and popular participant

  8. Culecos and parades • Culecos are performed during the day. These consists of people enjoying water pumped from a truck to mitigate the tropical heat. • Parades are performed during the night. Decorated trucks carry the queen while people cheer at her
