Timeline • In 1789 the French revolution ends • 1791 the Haitian slave rebellion begins • 1803 Haiti gains its independence from France and ends slavery -It is said that much like the French revolution gained its inspiration from the American revolution the Haitian revolution gained its inspiration from the French revolution explaining their close proximity on a time line.
Social groups with in the colony • At the time of the rebellion there were 5 main social groups: the white planters, petite Blancs, Freed slaves, run-away slaves and slaves -the White planters and Petite Blancs accounted for about 40,000 of haiti’s population while the freed slaves and current slaves accounted for over 530,000 -the ratio of slaves to whites was approximately 10-1

The beginning of the rebellion • The first act of revolution occurred on August 21, 1791 when Toussaint Breda led a slave rebellionagainst white planters • By 1792 heformer slaves controlled 1/3 of Haïti
The conflict expands • Soon after Toussaint Breda revolt french troopswere sent to qual the slave uprising, theyhadlittleeffect. • By 1793 british troopsarrived in an attempt to claim the island as theirownhowevertheyleft in 1798 aftersufferingseveraldefeatsat the hands of Toussaint Breda
Death tolls • As the conflict grew so did the violence 100,000 of the 500,000 blacks and 24,000 of the 40,000 whites were killed.
1801 • By 1801 the slave revolt spilled over into the British colony of Santo Domingo known presently as the domincan republic • After Toussaint Breda gained control over the entireisland of Hispaniola in 1801 heabolishedslavery • Shortlyafterabolishingslavery Toussaint Breda namedhimselfGovernor-General for life over the island of Hispaniola
The French fight back • General Charles Leclerc, Napoleon's brother in law was sent to Saint Dominique with 43000 French soldiers to capture Toussaint • After his capture he was sent back to France were he died in prison in 1803 • By January, 1st, 1804 under the lead of Jean-Jacques Dessalines Saint Dominique declared its independence and renamed in Haiti
