Write the review for the school magazine– structure it like this: • Refer to the fact that classics are worth a re-watch –mention film/ Who the Bond is/ director and date • Give an overview of the openings mood/ description and discussion on the impact of the scene as a whole. • Use detail and ideas from each box or most of them to pick out bits to discuss about camera angle, then movement. Then editing, sound and mise-en-scene.

Before you start • You should write in the PRESENT TENSE – the opening IS not WAS/ sound used is... • Lots of adjectives must be used in this as you are giving your opinion on areas of the opening. You do not need to say ‘I thought’ all the time just use the adjectives such as ‘This dull sound track did not serve to...’ or ‘This exhilarating close up forces the audience to focus on Bond’s strength’ • You can make up words using suffixes and prefixes (esque or ish) or hyphenating words: ‘This Matrix-esque move’ or ‘special-effect-less’ opening or ‘this uber-thrilling soundtrack’ or the ‘Hitler-like enemy’

  5. What else • Use a chatty tone mixed with formal word choice using you and I is fine in this • Aim for complex vocabulary • Make your tone judgmental, humorous and confident • Try to make comparisons throughout – the music reminded me of..the acting was like... • Remember your audience

  6. Model openings • ‘You might not normally rush to watch films that came out 10 years before your parents even thought of having you but believe me this may be worth a watch... • My first thought when someone says ‘James Bond’ is Why, why why and on a revisit to ‘The Living Daylights’ it still is! • ‘Bond is so old’, I hear you cry but wait: old can be wise and wise can be good. In film terms this oldie is great. • As action adventure goes you can not beat the greats – so re-rent Bond ‘The Living Daylights’ and re-visit the pleasure of classic film...
