2. The Three Souls • People were believed to have three souls: Ka, Ba, and Akh • Ka was a duplicate of the body, but less solid • Ba could leave the tomb and revisit the mortal world • Akh was the immortal soul that existed once Ba and Ka united after the person’s death • Mummification was used to preserve these souls

3. Embalmers • Four different types of embalmers • Hery Sesheta- made the incision for removal of the internal organs • HetemwNetjer- assisted the Hery Sesheta with the death rituals • Hery Heb- read spells and prayers • Wetyw- removed the organs and bandaged the mummy • They were very secretive about their work

4. 70-Day Rule • The process lasted for 70 days • 15 days for cleaning and purification • 40 days for drying • 15 days for wrapping, bandaging, and painting

5. Mummification Process (Steps 1-5) • Step 1- Body taken to embalmers • Step 2- Body was washed • Step 3- Brain was removed • Step 4- Sap was poured into brain, to keep the skull from collapsing • Step 5- Intestines were removed

6. Mummification Process (Steps 6-10) • Step 6- Intestines were stored in canopic jars, yet the heart was left in the body • Step7- Body packed with small sacks of natron • Step 8- Body moisture absorbed • Step 9- Small sacks of natron removed • Step 10- Corpse washed

7. Mummification Process (Steps 11-15) • Step 11- Body was anointed • Step 12- Body was packed with linen • Step 13- Cavities were sewn together • Step 14- Body was covered with bandages • Step 15- Mummification process is then completed
