Evaluation of HILT 2 Leonard Will Willpower Information <http://www.willpowerinfo.co.uk>
HILT2 covered five major topics • Indexing policies of existing resources • Users' needs and information-seeking behaviour • Identifying collections and resources relevant to any given topic • Mapping between vocabularies • Cost-benefit analysis of possible future "terminology server" systems.
A central catalogue of resources We need a central classified catalogue of resources (IESR; collections finder; browse tree) The alphabetical index to the classified catalogue should reflect its contents and contain all terms likely to be sought (disambiguation facility; UK Oriented Scheme Modifications Registry; mappings from other thesauri) Sustainability for the long term?
Mapping compound concepts Not “teeth” but “effect of fluoridation of water supplies on tooth decay in children” Many-to-many; pre- and post-coordination Not reversible: A = “(X or Y) and Z” Investigate further before investing in major mapping or terminology service implementation work.
Need to use local subject systems If resource centres use a common scheme, then we can provide direct access to individual items If not, switch enquirers from the central catalogue into the local subject systems of relevant collections Specialist terms and hierarchies cannot be mapped to from a more general scheme
