EVALUATION QUESTION 2 How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? Tom Kerr
Distribution Plan – How will the film be promoted? Theatrical trailer Magazine cover Film poster
Film promotion • TrailerThe trailer will be shown before the main picture in cinemas, and will also be viewable on numerous other platforms such as television, YouTube and mobile devices. It is the main form of promotion, giving the clearest idea of the products features, seeing as it includes actual extracts of the film. • Magazine coverThis will broaden our audience further. We had to research and decide on a specific magazine to feature our film, depending on which target audience each one caters to. • Film posterThe poster is a common feature of film promotion, offering more information about the film through artistic features such as photography and image effects. This will be seen on things like billboards, and also through the internet on websites like Google Images and YouTube.
USP – Unique Selling Point • Our USP, we believe is the fact that our film features two characters working together to overcome a deadly virus. A plot like this, and the main location (an abandoned house) we think will refresh the viewers and be enjoyable Our film features two similarly aged characters at different stages of the infection, giving the audience a chance to connect deeper with their individual struggles.
Promotional Techniques – Poster and Magazine Cover • There are numerous ways to promote our film. We are going to create a mock-up poster which would be displayed to the general public to generate interest. This is effective as through a poster you can capture all the values of your film, and give the public an idea of what the film is about through the use of imagery, colour, font and effects. It is key to use a good, catchy slogan, include critical reviews and also not confuse the audience about the films content. • We are also going to create a magazine cover. Through this, we can reach a specific audience. This is possible by choosing the correct magazine to feature in, depending on what type of media our audience consumes (for example, the general public generally doesn’t read Sight & Sound, and a teenage post apocalyptic fan generally wouldn’t read Little White Lies). By making a mistake here, we can severely limit the number of readers who are interested in the film. We would also need to create an eye catching cover that sticks out from the rest on store shelves, to entice passers-by.
Promotional Techniques – Social Networking • TwitterThe uprising of Web 2.0 and social connectivity has allowed websites like Twitter to flourish, it's main draw being short, snappy conversations with friends and also celebrities. I realise that a Twitter page about the film can be used to great effect for promotion. - Firstly, the follower count indicates our popularity, and could be interpreted as 'fans' of the film, going to the page to see a large number being a positive thing. - Secondly, we can send and receive Tweets on the subject of our film. As you can see in the example I have created, a simple buzz-creating tweet was sent by the page. In response, a fan of the genre replied positively which tells us that people are interested and talking about the film. - Thirdly, numerous 'web-games' can be played through this as a form of viral marketing. We could introduce something like a "list of infected followers" which relates to our plot, connects with fans and promotes the film simultaneously. Finally, the idea of 'trending topics' - where the most talked about subjects across the whole of Twitter appear on the side of everybodies news feed - gives the film the chance to be exposed to millions of web users, provided the page becomes popular enough for it to warrant trending status. • FacebookIn a similar vein to Twitter, more popular social networking site Facebook can also be utilised. A basic 'fan page' surrounding the film can feature such helpful indicators as:- Number of people who have 'liked' the page- An image page, where we could offer exclusive insights into the making of the film through photographs- An information box, where we could give news about the film such as incoming reviews, theatre times and general ideas about the plot- A 'wall', offering fans and passers-by to post their own comments. Here, like Twitter, conversation can ensue regarding the film offering people the chance to chat to likeminded people while also keeping up the pages popularity.Another important feature of Facebook is advertising. Things like film trailers can be placed along the side of the Facebook homepage for everybody to see, for a fee of course.
