Worldwide Commitments from Global Retail Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club (US/Can) & ASDA (UK) commit to 100% MSC targets by 2011. • Mark’s & Spencer sets 100% MSC certified targets by 2012. • Sainsburys to double number of MSC products in 2008. Addition of MSC to procurement policy. • AEON Japan’s largest retailer launched 14 MSC products last December • Metro in Germany have certified all their fresh fish counters for MSC Chain of Custody.   8. Foreign Government Sustainability/By Catch Demands Dutch Fish Importers Association – goal all imported species must be MSC by 2011!!!!! New IUU Regulation for EU January 1, 2010 based on sustainability. Will ‘non certified’ fish even be allowed to be sold in 5 years? Mentioned yesterday – USA Circle Hooks

  10. We created the Fishing & Living™ Project Contract between Anova Food, WWF Indonesia, PT Chen Woo Fisheries and PT Mega Pratama Fisheries, Makassar. Progressing Towards Fisheries Sustainability and Fishing Communities Support "Fishing and Living" Coral Triangle Network Initiative Program • Agreements: • Long-line boats with circle hooks • Observer program on LL vessels - WWF • Focus on small scale sustainable • hand-line fisheries for MSC. • Tuna Feasibility Study for MSC Certification • - Pre-assessment (in progress) - Assessment/Certification

  11. Circle Hooks on Longliners – Pressure must come from industry (the buyers)

  12. Two years into the program we continue to work with the WWF Indonesia to convince our long line producers to implement cirlce hooks. Not Easy!

  13. Problems - Market • The best way to convince a fisherman to change is to offer and economic incentive but as mentioned yesterday, tuna to the EU and USA are secondary markets for long line producers. • Alternative markets are not demanding. Japan! We can talk all we want but, until Japan requires circle hooks we do not have the economic incentive.

  14. Problems - Technical • The switch to circle hooks on a live bait fishery is very difficult.Easy in Japan or USA where dead bait is the norm.

  15. Improved Governance • As mentioned yesterday there are no regulations for long line vessels. • Also there is little real data on by-catch, only what is landed. • Observer requirement by KKP would be a great first step. • Use the data to determine the need and hence create regulations
