Bell Activity • Turn in the “How well do you know Utah?” activity to your box. • Get out your blue study guide then define the word “geography”. • Find the definition using a glossary from the shelf at the front of the room. • Think about what you believe this definition means then write a sentence using the word. • Draw a picture of something that shows you know what the word means. • Think of an example of “geography” and a non-example of the word. 9. What is geography? • “Geography is the study of the earth and its mountains, plateaus, valleys, deserts, rivers, lakes, and oceans. It is also the study of where people and animals live on the earth, and how they interact with their environment.”

10. Geography & Utah • People studying the geography of Utah would ask questions like: “What is Utah’s land like? Where do Utah’s people live? How does Utah’s environment help its people meet their needs for food, clothing, shelter, transportation, energy, jobs, and their need for beauty and peace of mind?”

11. Geography – the Stage of History • History is an account of what has happened in the past. • Both geographers and historians try to learn about how the features of a place affect people and events. • Why did people come here? • Why did they settle where they did? • What happened to them once they got here? • How did they help make Utah what it is today?

12. The Five Themes of Geography • We use five themes, or topics, to organize what they know or want to learn about a place. • Location • Place • Human-Environment Interaction • Movement • Regions

13. Location Location shows where we are. *Exact location is a latitude and longitude (a global location) or a street address (local location). Logan’s coordinates are: 41°44′16″N 111°49′51″W *Relative locations are described by landmarks, time, direction or distance from one place to another and may associate a particular place with another. 20. Policies and Procedures • Over the next week, we will learn about the policies and procedures of this class. • We will do a few items each day and there will be a quiz (for prizes) when we finish. • Pencil sharpening • Tissues and hand sanitizer • Website • Tardies • Gum, candy and drinks

21. Utah Counties • Knowing where things happened is important in history, geography, etc. • We will be learning the 29 counties of Utah over the course of this trimester. You will be tested on them at the end of the trimester. • On our class website, you can play games to help you learn the counties.

22. Utah’s Counties • Like the other states in the nation, Utah is divided into smaller segments called counties. • Utah has twenty nine counties.

24. Putting the Pieces Together • Now we will divide into groups. • Each group will receive a county puzzle. Using the lyrics (words) from the song, put the puzzle together with each person taking a turn putting the pieces in. • If the bell rings before we can clean up, no one is dismissed until all the puzzles are cleaned up and checked off the list.
