  1. Challenges for Students in Authentic Assessment in Higher Education Jones, M., Shelton, M. (2011). Developing Your Portfolio--Enhancing Your Learning and Showing Your Stuff: A Guide for the Early Childhood Student or Professional, Second Edition. Routledge.

  2. Challenges for Students • Anxiety & confusion in shifting from teacher to student-directed • Examining learning in a new light; avoiding “business as usual” • Understanding there is no one “right way” to learn

  3. Challenges for Students • Demands of using higher order thinking skills – no rote learning or cramming • Realizing that the goal is to meet one’s own highest standard, not to please the teacher by figuring out what the teacher wants & delivering it

  4. Challenges for Students • Accepting that disequilibrium comes with more engaged learning • Realizing that “learning is easy” is a myth. Real learning is messy and hard. • Knowing that “read the book, listen to the lecture, take the test, pass the class” most often doesn’t result in learning

  5. Challenges for Students • Changing one’s attitude about learning • Accepting personal responsibility for own learning • Knowing in oneself when something done well • Becoming comfortable in decision-making about one’s learning

  6. Challenges for Students • Have realistic expectations • Self-evaluate • Be creative • Synthesize experiences • Trust own instincts • Reflect on learning • Make connections between experience and new knowledge
