Objective: SWBAT describe the various types of water pollutionand distinguish between point and nonpoint sources of pollution. Do Now: What is BOD and what happens when it becomes too high? Tuesday 11/5/13 Agenda: • Point vs. Nonpoint Sources • Pollutant Jigsaw • Pollutant Relay Race Life’s Work: Read chapter 13 and study for quiz on Thursday Week at a Glance:Unit 5 – Water Pollution
What’s in the Water? Water Pollution Sources Water pollution is any chemical, biological, or physical change in water quality that has a harmful effect on living organisms or makes water unsuitable for desired uses. • Point source: specific location (drain pipes, ditches, sewer lines). • Nonpoint source: cannot be traced to a single site of discharge (atmospheric deposition, agricultural/industrial/residential runoff)
Point Source Pollution • Water pollution that can be traced to a specific spot (such as a factory or sewage treatment plant) because it is discharged into the environment through pipes, sewers or ditches.
Non-Point Source Pollution • Pollutants that cannot be traced to one single source or location (Ex: Agricultural fertilizer runoff and sediments from construction)
Point or Non-Point Source? On your Guided Notes, designate each with a “P” or “NP.” #1: Drainpipe from a chemical factory
Point or Non-Point Source? On your Guided Notes, designate each with a “P” or “NP.” #2: Animal waste runoff from a cattle feedlot
Point or Non-Point Source? On your Guided Notes, designate each with a “P” or “NP.” #3: Air Pollution from Cabs in NYC
Point or Non-Point Source? On your Guided Notes, designate each with a “P” or “NP.” #4: Smokestacks from Sugar Factory in Florida
Why Does it Matter? • Point sources of pollution are much easier to track down, prevent, and fix than nonpoint sources. • Nonpoint sources often involve more complex factors: politics, religion, lack of awareness, etc.
Pollutant Jigsaw Activity • You will be given a class set notecard with information about a specific type of pollutant. • On your foldable, write: • Share out with your group. NAME OF POLLUTANT (and definition, if applicable) EFFECTS CAUSES
