Radiology Technology Program MISSION STATEMENT Supply the community of Denver and the state of Colorado with safe, competent, Radiologic Science Professionals, who possess the entry-level knowledge and skills necessary to provide comprehensive quality care to adults and pediatric patients in a culturally diverse society.

  4. Mission Statement Pledge, cont. Provide students the opportunity to succeed in Radiology Technology by: • Offering equal access to the program. • Supporting successful student outcomes through a broad general education, comprehensive advising and support services, and a full range of learning activities that facilitate learning needs and styles. • Promoting the motivation, knowledge and skills necessary for upward mobility through life long learning. • Assisting the student to assume responsibility for his/her education and professionalism.

  5. PROGRAM GOALS 1.Students will be clinically competent Students will accurately position patients for radiographic procedures. Students will learn to apply appropriate technical factors. Students will understand and practice radiation protection. 2.Students will communicate effectively Students will demonstrate effective, medically-oriented communication skills. Students will practice written communication skills. 3. Students will use critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students will perform radiographic trauma examinations. Students will critically analyze images. 4. Students will evaluate the importance of professional growth and development. Students will be knowledgeable about the advanced Radiologic modalities. Students will demonstrate professional behavior. 5. Program Effectiveness Measures: According to the following measurable outcomes: Program will maintain a 21-month program completion rate 75% or higher Program will maintain a first-time pass rate of ARRT board examination of 75% or higher At least 85% of program graduates who are actively seeking employment will obtain employment within 6 months of graduation. Students will be satisfied with their education (80% or higher). Employers will be satisfied with the graduate’s performance (80% or higher).

  6. Program Accreditation • The RTE Program is accredited by: • JRCERT • Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology • The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Assoc. of Colleges & Schools • (this means transferable credits)

  8. What does a Radiologic Technologist need to know? • Anatomy & Physiology • Basic Physics • Positioning • Patient Care • Customer Service • How to work independently and as a member of a team

  9. Physical Requirements • Full range of body motion: • handling and lifting patients • physical dexterity • eye-hand coordination • Standing, walking 7 hrs of 8 hr day • Frequently lift, carry 25 pounds • Occasionally lift 50+ pounds with assistance • Requires visual, hearing acuity

  10. Associate in Applied Science Degree (AAS) • 5 semester program • Eligible to sit for ARRT Certification Examination upon graduation • Articulation agreements toward Bachelor’s degrees with: • Colorado Mesa University: BAS Radiologic Technology • Regis University: BS Healthcare Administration

What is unique about CCD’s Radiography Program? • Clinical Internships at Denver hospitals • Multiple Laboratories at CCD Lowry Campus: • 2 working x-ray rooms • C-arm and portable equipment • Digital and film/screen imaging • Nursing simulation and skills labs • Computer lab • Anthropomorphic phantom • Longest standing Radiography program in Colorado

Pre-requisite Coursework: • ENG 121- English Composition • BIO 106 or BIO 201/202 • MAT 121 or higher (beginning Spring 2015 application) • PSY 101 or SOC 101 or PSY 235 • HPR 178- Medical Terminology (2 credits) • RTE 101- Intro. to Radiography • “B” grade or better required for program entry • Strongly Recommended: PHY 105 (Physics) Note: There is a 7 year limit for all science prerequisites & 10 years on Math

  13. Transcripts • Submit transcripts to CCD Admissions Department as soon as possible • CCD Admissions dept: (303) 556-2420 International Transcripts: • U.S. equivalency from World Education Services, see website at www.wes.org • CCD will not translate international transcripts

Application Process • Complete all prerequisite coursework • Submit complete admissions packet April 15th - May 15th • Packet must be complete, or it will not be considered • Packets evaluated & scored • Top scoring candidates (approx. 40) invited to interview 25 accepted • Interviews conducted first 2 weeks of Summer semester • No exceptions or alternate dates • Information from application packet and interview compiled,scored on a matrix.

Application Process, cont’d • Top scoring candidates invited to enter program in August • Notification of acceptance will occur in late June; the next 4 highest-scoring candidates will be placed on a waiting list • Students may apply and interview a maximum of 3 times • If requested, the Radiography program staff will provide recommendations to help candidates improve their chances for success the next year if not invited into the program.

Admission Packet • MUST BE COMPLETE! • Documents available at www.ccd.edu/radiography • Send Official transcripts to CCD admissions dept., with request for evaluation ASAP! • Verification of completed application to CCD • Radiography Program application • Resume and cover letter • Unofficial transcripts from all transfer credit institutions • Two structured reference surveys (sealed envelope & signed) • Your contact information, including your email address

Admission Packet • A typed, well-written, grammatically correct, essay-style answer to two questions (one page each) found on Radiography website • Examples: • What are your professional interests and goals? • What personal characteristics do you believe a person should have to be a successful Radiologic Technologist? • Provide verifiable date of attendance of at least one Information & Advising session

Interview • Attributes considered during interview: • Verbal and non-verbal Communication skills • Healthcare and Customer Service Experience • Aptitude for healthcare • Volunteer/Community Service • GPA & RTE 101 Grade • Supplemental course work • Preparedness for 40+ hour/week academic & clinical schedule • Professionalism • Appearance, Punctuality • Ability to work as a team member

  19. Tips • Gain healthcare experience: • Volunteer at a hospital or nursing home • Get a job at a healthcare facility • Research the profession to assure it is a good fit for you • Maintain a high GPA • Including RTE 101 • Interview: • Dress Professionally • Arrive early • Show enthusiasm for previous jobs/career • Demonstrate aptitude for teamwork

  20. I’m in! Now What Happens? From June to August several things happen: • Job Shadow at a clinical site • Get Immunizations • CPR certification • 10-year Federal background check & drug screening • Line up Financial Aid (at least 6-8 weeks before fall semester) • Prepare yourself and your family for a challenging two years!

Criminal Background Check This is a 10 year Federal Background Check Disqualifying Offenses: • Any conviction, plea of guilty or no contest, or deferred adjudication of the following criminal offenses (felony or misdemeanor) appearing on a criminal background check will disqualify an applicant for admission to a CCCS Health Program. • There is no appealing this background check. It is mandatory.

ICrimes of violence (assault, sexual offenses, arson, kidnapping, murder, any crime against an at-risk adult or juvenile, etc.). as defined in section 18-1.3-406 C.R.S. in the 10 years immediately preceding the submittal of application. II Any offense involving unlawful sexual behavior—same time limit as above. III Any crime, the underlying basis of which has been found by the court on the record to include an act of domestic violence, as defined in section 18-6-800.3 C.R.S. in the 7 years immediately preceding the submittal of application.  • IV Any crime of child abuse, as defined in section 18-6-401 C.R.S.—same time limit as above. • V Any crime related to the sale, possession, distribution or transfer of narcotics or controlled substances—same time limit as III.  • VI Crimes of theft—Felony has a 7 year limit; Misdemeanor has a 5 year limit

VII Any offense of sexual assault on a client by a psychotherapist, as defined in section 18-3-405.5 C.R.S. in the 7 years immediately preceding the submittal of application  • VIII Crimes of moral turpitude (prostitution, public lewdness/exposure, etc.) Same time limit as above. • IX Registered sex offenders (NO time limit) • X Any offense in another state, the elements of which are substantially similar to the elements of any of the above offenses.  • XI More than 1 D.U.I. in the 7 years immediately preceding the submittal of application • Students who have successfully completed the terms of their deferred adjudication agreement will not be disqualified.

  25. Tuition Costs, In-state (Subject to change) • Pre-requisites: $1,550.00 • 1st Year $3,370.00 • 2nd Year $2,310.00 • Total Tuition=$7,230.00 • Books = $800.00 +/- • Uniforms = $250.00 +/- • Fees= $500.00 • Total = $8,780.00 +/- (2013 data) $$$ Affordable!

Program Curriculum • Physical principles of Radiation: • Physical interactions which create x-rays • Properties of x-ray energy • Thorough understanding ofx-ray equipment operation • How x-rays affect human cells at the atomic level • Anatomy and Procedures: • Basic understanding of all anatomical systems • In-depth study of bony anatomy • Positioning of every body part for radiographic image production • Appropriate technical factors needed in order to create a diagnostic imagee

  30. Curriculum, cont’d • Pathology • Familiarity with common diseases and how they affect the x-ray image • Patient Care • Basic nursing care • sterile procedures • Starting IV’s • Vital signs • CPR • Basic understanding of the care and treatment of the ill
