  4. Karachi I grew up in Karachi, in Pakistan. Karachi is Pakistan's largest city, as well as its financial capital. The photo shows where I went to school in Karachi, from 6th grade until I completed high school. This school was founded by the British in 1857 during colonial times.

  5. Karachi Karachi is a port city - which is why we get to go to the beach a lot!

  7. Lahore I attended college in Lahore, Pakistan. This is a photo of me and my friends on our graduation day, along with my mum. On the left is a photo of my college library.

  8. Lahore Lahore is an ancient city, with many beautiful old buildings and monuments. This is a photo of me at the Lahore Fort, or Shahi Qila, built by emperor Akbar, who ruled the Mughal Empire between 1556 & 1605. On the left is an entrance for war elephants.

  9. Life at college On the left is the Academic Writing Center, where I had a job as a Writing Tutor. We helped other students work on their essays, and held workshops on writing.

  10. Life at college We are at Rohtas Fort in the photo on the left. It is a garrison fort, constructed in 1541. My friends and I were members of AIESEC, which is a global organization that works for international exchange with young people.

  14. My Career - I am studying for a Master's degree in Sociology and Education. - My goal is to become an educational researcher and to work with N.G.O.s in Pakistan to improve education. I was VERY excited when I first arrived at Columbia to study!

  15. How Did I Get Here? * Have always been interested in Sociology - In high school, chose Sociology as a subject. * Also studied Social Sciences while at college. * Gained relevant work experience at college, tutoring at the Academic Writing Center. My Sociology classroom.

  16. How Did I Get Here? * The college work experience helped me get my first job as a Sociology, English Language & English Literature teacher. * Then I got some experience working with an NGO in public schools (Teach For Pakistan). This is while I was directing a school play.

  17. How Did I Get Here? *Meanwhile, kept reading up on education in Pakistan, and how to improve it. * Wanted to come here to study, but needed to find funds. * Applied to the Fulbright Scholarship. * Work experience and research helped me write the essays for the application. * I also had to give the Graduate Record Examination, and get letters of recommendations from my professors and employers.

  19. Characteristics for being a teacher * Interest in your students. * Ability to motivate people. * Good communication skills. * Public speaking skills. * Content knowledge. * Empathy. * Patience. * Creativity. Can you think of any others?

  20. Characteristics for being a researcher * Desire to learn and discover more about something. * Communication skills (for interviewing, etc.) * Organizational skills. * Writing skills. * Mathematical skills. * Persistence. * Inventiveness. Can you think of any others?

  21. Why education research? * Education is a basic right for all children, but too few have an opportunity to get quality education. * Education research can help us uncover the root causes behind educational failure and inequality. * It is an exciting thing to help fix these root causes! This is a photo of one of the teachers at Teach For Pakistan!

  23. 1. Join up with your Research Partners. 2. Collect handout. 3. Brainstorm! 4. Share your ideas with the class. Research Question: How can we help students learn well and be interested in what they are learning?
