Vietnamese Expansions (NLV) • History of Vietnam A great span of numbers 959.701 – 959.7041 have been added to the extracts from the schedule 900 of DDC 22 in order to expand DDC 14. • Geography of Vietnam T2—597 is detailed for official 7 geographical regions and 64 administrative cities and provinces 10

Vietnamese Expansions / 2 • Ethnic groups in Vietnam Class number 305.805-.89 in DDC 22 and 305.895 in DDC 14 has been revised, specified and expanded much in order to cover 54 ethnic groups, inhabiting Vietnam. • Vietnamese languages On the basis of expansion of the notation 495.9 from DDC 22, the current notational system in Vietnamese DDC14 covers all subjects, related to languages of 54 ethnic groups, inhabiting Vietnam 11

Vietnamese Expansions / 3 • Vietnamese Literature On the basis of expansion of the notation 895.9 from DDC 22, the current notational system in DDC14 covers all subjects, related to literatures in languages of 54 ethnic groups, inhabiting Vietnam. • Vietnamese political parties Notational system 324.2597, which is absent even in DDC 22, has been inserted into Vietnamese DDC 14 for Vietnamese political parties. 12

Vietnamese Expansions / 4 • Marxism-Leninism The number 320.53, for Marxism-Leninism as a political ideology, and the number 335.4, for Marxism-Leninism as Economic systems, have been revised and expanded much according to DDC 22, except 335.5 and 335.6, for democratic socialism and fascism, respectively, which have been deleted. These subjects have been moved to another place in including notes. 13

Vietnamese Language • Inconsistent usage of Vietnamese language • Inconsistencies in translations • Complex diacritics and accents • Inconsistent treatments of foreign names and geographic terms • Difficulty of translation of esoteric / technical terminology from DDC • Influence of singular/plural on meaning • American terminology not in common use in English in Vietnam 14

Relative Index • Creating a Relative Index which is relevant to characteristics and common usage of Vietnamese language. • Addition of Vietnamese synonyms as “See Also” references • Addition of alternative forms in common usage • Addition / deletion of qualifiers • Deletion of English synonyms • Integration / separation of English entries into Vietnamese words 15

Editorial Software • Timing of software introduction was after completion of most of the translation. • Inability of NLV to run Linux platform, remote hosting • Difficulty of adding Vietnamese expansions • Demands of accurate data inputting • No support for introductory matter • Main benefit in Index and print formatting • High quality translation and print product 16
