Weightment System • It is the system in force on Indian Railway under which closed bags except parcel bags without limit of weight in luggage vans in the custody of the Railway Guards. • Bags are sent loose or enclosed in transit bags. • Each bags must have “Weightment System” label besides usual tag label.
Mails so carried are charged according to the weight per kilometer subject to a minimum charge for each dispatch as for 10 Kilograms. • Bags sent under this system are weighted twice a year-on 21st January & 21st July for the purpose of half yearly payment to the Railway • (Rule 226 & 234 Vol.V)
The system is adopted to provide a regular daily exchange of mails in the following cases. Between offices served by unimportant Railway lines. Between offices situated at station at which the sectional mail train do not stop.
Where the mails are light • Where it is desirable to have additional dispatch by a train other than one carrying regular mail. • Valuable items should not be sent in the bags conveyed under the weightment system if regular department conveyance is available.
