Getting the Idea • To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators and then the denominators. • To multiply a fraction by a whole number, rename the whole number as an improper fraction with a denominator of 1
Example 1 • 5x2/3=[ ] • Strategy: Convert the whole number to an Improper Fraction. Step 1: Rename the whole number as an improper fraction. 5= 5/1 Step 2: Multiply the Numerators and multiply the denominators 5/1x2/3 = 5x2/1x3 = 10/3 Step 3: Convert the improper fraction to a mixed number in simplest form. 10/3 = 3&1/3 • Solution: 5x2/3 = 3 &1/3
Helpful Hint Sometimes you can cancel like terms by dividing a numerator and a denominator by the GCF before multiplying. This will help in multiplying easier numbers.
Example 2 • 5/8x2/15 • Strategy: Cancel like terms, then multiply. Step 1: Divide 5 and 15 by the GCF, which is 5 1/8x2/3 Step 2: Divide 8 and 2 by the GCF, which is 2 1/4x1/3 Step 3: Multiply 1/4x1/3 = 1/12 • Solution: 5/8x2/15= 1/12
Helpful Hints • To multiply mixed numbers, rename each mixed number as an improper fraction first. Remember these steps for converting a mixed number to an improper fraction • Multiply the whole number part by the denominator of the fraction part. • Add that product to the numerator of the fraction part. • That sum becomes the numerator of the improper fraction. • The denominator of the improper fraction stays the same.
Example 3 • 6&5/9x 4&2/3 • Strategy: Convert each mixed number to an improper fraction. Step 1: Convert 6&5/9 to an improper fraction. (6x9)+5=59 6&5/9 59/9 Step 2: Convert 4&2/3 to an improper fraction. (4x3)+2=14 4&2/3 14/3 Step 3: There are not like terms to cancel so multiply. 59/9x14/3 = 826/27 Step 4: Convert the improper fraction to a mixed number. 826/27= 30R16 30& 16/27 • Solution: 6&5/9x 4&2/3= 30&16/27
