Kojo IIthe Japanese Medaka By Jake Smith and Dane Roken
April 17 • On the first day our medaka egg was at stage 29. • It’s about 3 days and 2 hours old. • This stage is the start of the internal ear development. • Today we measured the heartbeat at 110 beats per minute • Yolk sac-encloses the yolk and gives the embryo nourishment from it 7 days until hatching
April 20 • Our medaka is now in stage 35 (about 5 days 12 hours old). • In this stage, the visceral blood vessels form. • Filament-a long chain of cells. 4 days until hatching
April 21 • Now Kojo is in the 36th stage of development (6 days old). • Today was the first day that red blood was visible in the egg. • We measured the heartbeat at about 126 beats per minute. • In this stage, the cadual fin reaches the otic vessel (ear) • Caudal fin-tail fin • Heart-pumps blood through the blood vessels 3 days until hatching
April 22 • Now our medaka is in stage 37. • Its 7 days old. • This is the stage in which the pericardial cavity forms (where the heart is). • Somite-layers of the mesoderm that become muscles and vertebrate etc. • Brain-the main part of the central nervous system that controls all physical and mental actions 2 days until hatching
April 23 • Now Kojo is in stage 38 (8 days old). • The spleen is developed in this stage. • We measured the heartbeat at 138 beats per minute. • Chorion-outermost layer of the embryo 1 day until hatching
April 24 • Our Medaka is now in stage 39 at 9 days old. • It’s going to hatch at any moment. • To hatch the embryo dissolves the inner layers of the chorion and tear out of the last layer. • Spleen-organ that filters our worn out blood cells and has a reservoir of blood. Ready to hatch!!!
April 27 • Kojo is has hatched and is about 12 days old and in the 42 or 2nd fry stage. • Intestine-digests and absorbs nutrients • Mouth-takes in food/begins digestion • Lateral fins-pair of fins that help the fish go up and down in the water
Caring for the Medaka • You should always feed your medaka with commercially prepared food. Don’t overfeed! • Keep the fish away from doors and windows or other things that could cause sudden changes in temperature or light. • Make sure that the water quality is good (ph levels, ammonia etc.). • Remove waste and uneaten food very often with a net. • Watch out for bigger fish. Medaka are very small fish and could be eaten by larger ones. Photo by flickr user strollers
