The Messiah The idea of a messiah or saviour goes all the way back to King David who was one of the most successful military rulers ancient Israel ever had. In the centuries between King David and the time of Jesus Israel suffered many invasions and military defeats. One of these defeats resulted in thousands of their young men and women being taken into exile by the Babylonians Introduction
As a result of this the Jewish people prayed for a new messiah and saviour to come and restore Israel to the kind of power and glory it had under King David. When the Romans conquered Israel (they called it Palestine) in 63 BC, the Jewish people again began to hope and pray for the Messiah to come.
The word messiah literally means ‘anointed one’. In this case anointed by God. But can be replaced by the word saviour. The Greek version of the word messiah is “Christos” which gives us our word Christ. What does this tell you about what the followers Jesus believed about him?
