What is a Drug? • A drug is a substance other than food that changes the structure or function of the body or mind.
Drug Abuse • Drug Abuse is the use of a drug for nonmedical purposes.
What is the difference between a medicine and an illegal drug? Can both be harmful.
Medicines • Prescription Medicine is a medicine that can be used safely only with a doctor’s written permission. • Over the Counter Medicines are medicines that you can buy without a doctor’s prescription.
Medicines • It is important that we understand the difference between the types of drugs that exist. • There are drugs known as prescription drugs and there are illegal drugs. • You need to understand that both drugs can be harmful to your health.
Medicines • Both kinds of medicines can have side effects and should be used with caution. • Even though medicines are safe to use in most cases, drug abuse can still occur.
Side Effects • A side effect is a reaction to medicine other than the one intended
Misusing Medicine • Medicines should be taken only when needed. Remember that medicines are drugs, and drug misuse can cause serious health problems.
When to Use Medicine • Take medicine according to directions. • Take the recommended or prescribed dosage. • Take the medicine for the length of time prescribe by a doctor. • Do not give your prescription medicines to others. • Don’t mix medicines without your doctor’s approval.
Illegal Drugs • Illegal drugs are substances it is against the law for people of any age to manufacture, possess, buy, or sell.

Stimulants • Stimulants are drugs that speed up the body’s functions.
Effects of Stimulants Use • Increase heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure. • Provide a false sense of energy and power. • When stimulants wear off, the user feels exhausted and emotionally unbalanced. • Can cause death.
Types of Stimulants • Amphetamines • Strong stimulants drugs that speed up the nervous system. Also known as “speed.” • Cocaine • An illegal stimulant made from the coca plant that is inhaled, smoked, or injected. • Crack Cocaine • A concentrated form of cocaine that is highly addictive. Makes users feel a sense of “false energy.”
Depressants • Depressants are drugs that slow down the body’s functions and reaction, including heart and breathing rates.
Effects of Depressant Use • Make users feel relaxed and calm. • Impairs coordination and judgment. • May cause drowsiness. • Causes depression and mood swings. • Can cause coma and death if combined with other drugs. • Addiction.
Types of Depressants • Alcohol • Tranquilizers • Relaxes muscles. • Barbiturates • Used for sedate it’s users. • Hypnotics • Used to put users to sleep.
Depressants • Many depressants come in the form of a tablet or capsule. Most of the time depressants are swallowed but also come in many other forms.

Effects of Marijuana Use • Inability to think or speak clearly. • Loss of short-term memory. • Increased heart rate. • Fearfulness and paranoia. • Damages the lungs and immune system. • Problems with normal body development.
Effects of Marijuana Use • Lack of coordination, slowed reaction time. • Difficulty paying attention. • Inability to have children. • Kills and destroys brain cells. (you can not get brain cells back that have been destroyed) • Addiction

How Alcohol Affects the Body • Alcohol is a drug that affects a person physically and mentally. These are the areas of the body where alcohol does its damage: • Brain • Heart • Liver • Kidneys • Blood Vessels • Stomach
Brain • Impairs judgment, reasoning, memory, and concentration. • Slows down the reaction time. • Slurs speech. • Destroys brain cells and risk of permanent memory loss. • Can cause unconsciousness or death.
Heart • Increases heart rate. • Causes an irregular heart beat. • Permanently damages the heart’s ability to function properly.
