  2. What is NAIL BITING? • Repetitive behavior that destroys the fingernails, the skin around the nails and cuticle • A habit in almost everyone • Also known as Onychophagia

  3. What is wrong with NAIL BITING? • It breaks the skin around the nails • It can bring germs into these openings • It can cause an infection from the germs • Sometimes it might bleed

  4. Causes of NAIL BITING • Combination of biological and environmental factors • Common in people with OCD or body dysmorphic disorder • Self soothing – calming affect • Simulation – to be alert and awake • Perfectionism – trying to fix the smallest of irregularity (for improved appearance)

  5. Effects of NAIL BITING • Red & sore fingertips • Cuticle Bleeding • Infections in the nail bed or mouth • Nail Deformation • Dental Problems –infections of the gums • Dirty nails can bring parasites into the body - intestinal worms • Paronychia – infection • Self-consciousness • Embarrassment

Treatments for NAIL BITING • Medications – same group as OCD including antidepressants (might take several weeks) • Natural Remedies – B Vitamin Inositol (reduce urge to pick; take in large quantities) • Psychotherapy • Apply bad tasting nail polish clear polish • Discouraging the habit • Wearing mouth pieces

The slowest is on the thumbnail • Nails reflect your health status • A hang nail is painful because you have ripped open the edge of the living nail root • The longest finger nail ever recorded was that of an Indian guy and it was 48 inches long
