Basic Résumé Tips • Length • KEEP TO ONE PAGE • Format • One inch margins throughout • Bold and italicize to help appear more readable • Use easy to read font (Times New Roman) • Make header larger than the body text • Use bullet points • Prioritize these with the first one being the most important
How to Make it Stand Out • Use “Action Words” • Start each bullet with an action verb • Analyzed, integrated, forecasted, negotiated, etc… • What goes where? • Education at top • Rule of thumb for GPA: include if it is above 3.0 • Professional Experience is next • Company name and your role below it (see example) • Include these action verbs here! • Leadership and Extracurricular Activities comes last • What do you do outside of just the classroom (MSUFA)
Be Specific to the Job • Use clues from the job description • Job calls for teamwork show teamwork • Analytical? make it clear that you have experiences that show that you are! • Use numbers to describe accomplishments • Led a team of “six”… • Include an “Additional” section • Add anything that makes you unique • Do you speak another language?
Cover Letters • First paragraph • Explain what position you are interested in and why you are right for the job • Keep it short and to the point • Second paragraph • How can you contribute to the company • What accomplishments have shown you are right for this job • Last paragraph • Thank them for reading and include contact info
