Scenario 1 • You’ve volunteered to lead a planning committee that includes the Section President You’ve met twice and at both meetings she dominated the discussion resulting in little contribution from others. What should you do? • A: When you ask for input, do a “round the room” response. • B: Have an off-line discussion with the President to ask her to quiet down and allow others to talk. • C: When you sense she’s dominating the conversation, strategically say “ I’d like to hear from someone else. Elsie – what do you think?” • D: Continue to allow her to have the floor – after all she is the Section President. • E: Other ideas?
Scenario 2 • Your committee has to come up with new ideas to attract new members. When solicited for ideas, everyone is bringing up the same approaches you’ve used in the past with limited success. What should you do? • A: Research and try a new discussion technique (e.g. Outside observer log) • B: Use brainstorming with visioning kinds of statements (e.g. If you had a million dollars…) • C: Ask people to relate a personal experience – “Why did you come to your first SWE meeting?” • D: Solicit the help/services of a professional meeting facilitator. • E: Other ideas?
