The Great Fear • In addition to the events in Paris and at Versaille, peasants in the countryside also became involved • Peasants worried that the King would put a stop to Revolution and attack them • Peasants armed themselves and attacked chateaux, killed people, burned feudal certificates and obligation records • However, not everyone believed in the Revolution • there were some anti-revolutionary forces in the north-east sections of France • why might they not have supported the revolution?
Paris and the King • Still in 1789 • National Assembly met at Versailles • Abolished all feudal rights and ended serfdom in France • Tithes abolished • All people were declared equal before the law • Why are these events so important?
Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen • Similar to the American Declaration of Independence • Contained the ideas of Locke, Voltaire, Montesquieu and Rousseau • Guaranteed freedom of thought, speech, religion, security and property • Limited power of the government • There was also a new constitution being worked on (constitution – major laws and principles of a government) • Everyone was given the title of “citizen” • The government gained control of the church
Women’s March on Versailles • While freedoms were guaranteed to males and females, only males were allowed to vote and be involved in politics • A group of women marched 50 km to Versailles to confront the king • They were joined by others and followed by the national guard • Women stormed the palace and killed guards • They were successful in forcing the king and queen back to Paris
Other feelings • Many aristocrats (and even some of the 3rd estate) were leaving to other countries • In 1791, Louis and Marie tried to escape in disguise, in an attempt to gain foreign support and restore the monarchy • The royal family was arrested and imprisoned • A newly formed legislative assembly tried to form a government, but too many groups wanted the power • Radicals wanted a republic, moderates wanted a constitutional monarchy, monarchists wanted to restore the king’s power • Conflict continues
